Step 1: Describe the Conflict
Each participant writes a paragraph describing the conflict as it currently exists.• Encourage participants to state clearly how the conflict began.
• Tell them that they will share this statement with their conflict partner.
• Direct each participant to write a second paragraph describing a solution to the conflict. (This statement is not used until the end of the exercise.)
Step 2: Planning for Starting and Maintaining Communications (Reaching Out)
• Participants craft a statement they can use to reach out to their partners.
• Encourage the use of “I statements.”
• Encourage taking responsibility.
• Encourage an apology if warranted.
• Statements should include clear desire to make progress.
